"There is a youtube channel called osmosis, which is about health and medicine. I want you to watch and choose one video about an illness and/or a microbe and take some notes, as you will be presenting said illness for the synchronous session.

So I chose to briefly talk about Sleep Apnea and these are some notes I took:
Intro: Breathing is important
Apnea = from Greek 'apnoia' meaning breathless
Medical definition: Sleep disorder, momentarily stop breathing
Two types: Normal + Central (or a combination of both normally)
Normal, most common: some sort of blockage in the air pipes. Nasal cavity and pharynx -> laryngopharynx -> trachea
Could have multiple causes: Allergies, swollen glands, severe overbite, weight issues (common)
Central: Brain induced, cycles of CO2 lows and highs (hypo and hypercapnia)
Symptoms: Snoring and Sleep deprivation, and during the day difficulty concentrating, headaches, constant fatigue
I can exacerbate risk of heart arrhythmia and failure, respiratory issues, diabetes and even some types of cancer. I would add Alzheimer’s.
Diagnosis: Test and then a sleep study. Comprehensive polysomnogram.
Treatment:
avoid depressants (alcohol, sleeping pills, etc.)
Sleeping on the side
CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure)
Sometimes surgery
