Unit 5 - Task 2 - the one about religion

"I want you to do some research about a religion that is not one of the best known, especially in our area and Culture (Roman Catholicism). The more exotic, the better. Watch some videos and read some articles, and prepare your notes for making a 5-10 minute talk about that religion in our next synchronous class. Using extra materials (digital presentation, etc…) is optional. It can be about a currently existing or defunct one, but I’d prefer if you chose a ‘real’ one which has (or has had) a following, rather than parodies. You can send me the notes here."

I was going to choose Pastafarianism, but hey!

Anyway, I found this task a bit difficult, but probably because I left it rather late.

I chose Jainism, mainly because I knew nothing at all about it.
It turns out that it is a very complicated religion. And very old too.

Anyway, I have prepared another genially presentation and hopefully I will manage not to botch the presentation to badly in class.

Jainism is ancient, some scholars think that it might have originated in the Indus Valley Civilisation, a long long time ago in the Bronze Age or about 2500 BCE or roughly 4500 years ago.
But the 'modern version' of Jainism can be traced to in between the 8th and 5th centuries BCE, or some 2500 years ago.
The modern version is contemporary with Buddhism and just a bit younger than Hinduism.

It is primarily an Indian religion, but it has a very small presence in a few other countries.

Only about 0.5% of the Indian population follow Jainism ... just over 5 million.

It is quite a complex religion to summarise in five or 10 minutes, but I will try nevertheless.

  1. Sure, difficult to summarize, but then again, you can expect some extra time and leniency, as usual...
