Unit 2 - Task 5 - the one about the leisure time TEDx talk in Germany 2012

"Watch the following video and make a summary (notes or recording) which you will send to me before the next synchronous session."

The video is:

and this is my recorded mediation and some notes below.

Prof Dr Ulrich Reinhardt talks to us about Leisure 3.0 from the year 2012.

He goes through 5 main phases on his talk:

1. A brief mention on how sometimes the obvious is staring us in the face.

2. Then he goes through a quick breakdown on how we spend our time, roughly 20% is work, 55% is doing things that we just have to do (sleep, shop, wash, eat, etc.) and about 25% is leisure time. All approximately and sometimes the boundaries are blurred.

3. He then moves onto a brief history of leisure time since the 1940s/50s ... and it seems to me that technology and consumerism drove the changes in leisure activities. He ends up summarising what we do nowadays with our free time (Germany, 2012).

4. After that he mentions that he sees a disconnect between what we do in our free time and what we would really like to do in that time. According to him, most people would like to do more things with other people, family and friends mostly; instead of just watching TV.

5. Finally he presents 3 wishes for the future.

- Expect less from technology and more from ourselves.
- Quality of Life is more important than raising Standard of Living.
- Don't think about what the future will look like but rather think about how we WANT the future to look like.

And with that we reach the end of my notes on the video. Don't forget to listen to the recording.

Thank you!
